How to ACTUALLY accomplish your 2026 goals

Are you someone who sets goals for the new year but ends up not accomplishing most of them? Same, for a long time. But that’s not the case anymore. I actually talked about this in my 2024 recap video on YouTube. And honestly, it might not be that you lack discipline, your goal-setting just might need a little help.
After noticing that I didn’t reach my 2024 goals, I made a few small tweaks. Those changes led to some major wins when I revisited my goals this year. You can see all of them here:

Without further ado, here are a few tweaks you can make to actually accomplish your goals
Take the emphasis off of the numbers
Number goals have their place. However, it can be a big disappointment when you have these goals and completely fall short. For example, in the 2024 video, I mentioned how I wanted to reach 1000 subscribers by the end of that year. But I was running both a podcast, radio show, and the YouTube channel in 2023, so I was not putting as much time into YouTube that was necessary for it to grow. Therefore, I feel short. You don’t control the amount of people that consume your content.
Instead: Make your goals into fulfillment or consistency goals. So instead of, I want to reach 100 followers on Instagram, make your goal, I want to post 3 posts per week on Instagram. These goals will help you to stay motivated and not become discouraged.
2. Don’t leave your goal setting until the last minute
It can be really easy to wait until December 30 or 31st to start making your goals for 2026. But it takes a moment to come up with your visions and goals for the next year. Also, if you are like me, you might end up feeling this burst of energy at the end of the year and make goals that are way beyond the things that you have the time or the energy to actually complete. This can set you up for a lot of disappointment.
Instead: Try to start on the first of December and think about the things that are working or have worked for you in the year and the things that you could change to make things a lot better. Then start making these small tweaks little by little in your December routine. This way when it is January, you already have started them.
3. Have a why for each goal
Do you have those pesky health goals on your list every year and you find that they go completely untouched? So many times, we create these goals because we feel like we should. We feel like we should be running everyday or we feel like we should be eating healthier. But a lot of times, without a why, we don’t have the motivation to get started. Do you want to run because it means you can have more energy to play tag with your kids? Or Do you want to go to the gym so you can have a lesser chance of illness? Write these things down and keep them in your mind as a motivation for you to move forward and stay on track with your goals.
4. Create accountability
Many goals die for a lack of accountability. This is one of the many reasons that I share my goals on my YouTube channel. I know that if at least 100 people see them then I will be mighty embarrassed if I come back next year and I have not made any movement on the goals that I spoke of. This helps me to get out there and start accomplishing the goals despite how I feel on any given day.
5. Limit the amount of goals
I remember one year I wrote 22 goals for my next year. 22! That is a whole lot considering that each goal required multiple high-energy steps to complete. The truth is that your brain only has so much capacity for goal management, so you have to keep this in mind when planning. What I like to do is split my life up into 4 or 5 distinct categories and choose no more than 3 distinct actions I want to take in each category. 2 of 3 of these actions are things that I have already started, and I just need to be a little more concrete about them.
6. Don’t only write the goals, write the mini steps you need to complete them
This is the most important part of achieving your goals. When you only write your goals without writing the steps you aren’t acknowledging the cost and the sacrifice it may take. The bible speaks about this in Luke 14:28-30 where Jesus is asking: what person builds a tower without first sitting down to count the cost? Every goal that your pursue is time that you are taking away from doing other things. So it is important that you are selective about what goals you decide to pursue.
7. Come back and reflect
After the year, it can be tempting to just move on and continue the process of setting goals and never going back to see if you actually made progress. This can be toxic because you never know if the type of goal setting you did work. When you have a goal that you set out and you either accomplish it or make progress on it, then you are proving to yourself that you can trust yourself and this energy can help you to move forward in your life and accomplish the next set of goals.
These are the 7 small tweaks I made to go from accomplishing zero goals in 2024 to accomplishing almost all of my goals in 2025!
If you would like to watch either or both of these videos, I believe they can be so helpful to help you create your own goal setting process. Don’t forget to say hi in the comments!
