5 Books That Changed My Life in My 20s (And Might Change Yours Too)
If you’re looking for a way to invest in yourself during your 20s without breaking the bank, start reading. Books have been one of the most affordable and transformative tools in my life, and I’ve read some that genuinely changed me and continue to do so. I want to share a few of them with you today!
Let me know in the comments if you’ve read any of these or if you agree with my picks.
5. All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr – Fiction
This is one of those books I think everyone should read. Set during World War II, it has a little bit of everything: action, mystery, and just a touch of romance. But more importantly, this book beautifully explores grief and the importance of family.
In your 20s, you’re often caught between relying on your family and learning to stand on your own yet still needing their support. That tension is real, and this book captures it so well. It’s a little sad at times, but the sweet moments make you cheer for the characters and stay connected until the end.
4. Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan
This story is heartbreaking, but it’s a powerful read if you’re navigating life changes which, let’s be honest, is constant in your 20s. People will move, friendships will shift, and you’ll often experience joy and sadness at the same time.
Esperanza Rising gently walks you through grief and change in a way that feels real and understandable. Although it’s a young adult novel, its depth and cultural richness (it partially takes place in Mexico) make it a great read at any age. If you like books that explore real-life emotions, this one’s a must.
3. The Secret Power of Speaking God’s Word by Joyce Meyer – Self-Help
Unlike the first two, this book is all about the here and now. It’s a guide to controlling your emotions through prayer which is a powerful, practical way to fight life’s battles.
What I love about this book is its layout. It lists common emotions and provides quick, powerful prayers you can say in five minutes or less. Whenever life feels overwhelming, I’ve found so much peace flipping through this book.
It’s also super portable—about the size of an A4 notebook—so you can easily keep it in your bag for those moments when you need immediate encouragement. It’s been such a helpful companion alongside my Bible.
2. Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan
This book takes grief head-on. While some of the other stories I’ve mentioned deal with grief indirectly, Counting by 7s dives into it in real-time.
Your 20s can be a season where you either learn to process your emotions or you risk numbing them in ways that can be harmful. This book gently guides you through that emotional balance and offers a little bit of sunshine even within its bittersweet, artistic storytelling.
If you’re looking for something that feels both honest and hopeful, this one’s for you.
1. Atomic Habits by James Clear – Self-Development
If you only read one book in your 20s, let it be Atomic Habits. Your habits will shape your future, and this book shows you how to build the ones that matter most.
What makes it special is that it teaches life-changing strategies without making you feel bad about where you currently are. It’s practical, encouraging, and incredibly relevant for setting up a life you’ll love.
Topics include how to set up your environment for success, how to stay consistent, and why small habits make a big difference. Trust me, you’ll read this book more than once. Grab a notebook and pen, because you’ll want to take notes.
