How to Make Fresh Flowers Last Longer (Preserve That Valentine’s Day Bouquet)
Fresh flowers are a simple way to bring color and life into your home, but they can wilt quickly if they aren’t cared for properly. With approximately 250 million roses purchased each year, knowing how to extend the life of fresh flowers is more relevant than ever. By following the tips below, I’ve been able to keep my bouquets looking fresh for nearly two weeks.
1. Trim the stems diagonally
As soon as you get your flowers, trim the stems at a diagonal angle. While I don’t know all the science behind it, this method helps the flowers absorb water more effectively and last longer.
2. Change the water regularly
After initially placing your flowers in water, you can wait until the next day to change it. However, keeping the water fresh is essential. When flowers sit in the same water for too long, bacteria can develop, causing them to wilt. I once removed a bouquet only to find slimy stems and murky brown water—definitely a sign it was time for a change.
3. Add aspirin to the water
Just as aspirin helps us feel better, it can help flowers stay upright and vibrant longer. This tip alone has made a noticeable difference in how long my bouquets last.
4. Use plant food
If your flowers come with a packet of plant food, be sure to use it. Since the flowers are no longer receiving nutrients from the soil, plant food helps replace what they’ve lost and extends their lifespan.
5. Change the water daily
This is the most important step. Take just five minutes each day to remove the flowers, refill the vase with fresh water, and place them back—preferably in sunlight. If you’re using aspirin, add a new tablet every other day.
I hope you all enjoy this Valentine’s day. Also, if you are single this Valentine’s day please check out some of these posts!
